Ronny Chieng
Ronny Chieng,
born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia is a comedian and actor. Chieng is currently
a senior correspondent on The Daily Show on Comedy Central and creator and star
of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student which began airing on ABC
(Australia) and Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru,
Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng grew up both in Singapore as
well as in the United States, living in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 to
1994. Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah in 2013 at the Comedy Festival in
Melbourne, Australia. Chieng was then asked to audition for the role of Noah's
Daily Show two years later. Chieng was named one of the 10 Comics to watch by
Variety in July of 2016. In October of 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The
Daily Show to react to an interview with Jesse Watts on a Fox News segment that
many considered racist. Chieng spoke in expletive-laden terms about the segment
from Fox News, a conservative news network. He also visited NewYork City's
Chinatown where Watters had mocked residents. The viral video was featured in
Slate and Washington Post. In his youth, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout.
Even though he's lived in Australia for more than 10 years, he still doesn't
have a permanent residence or citizenship in Australia. In the year 2018 Chieng
made a joke about being an apologist during the Daily Show, but afterwards, he
clarified that he was "100 percent sure of dogs".
